Southwest Valley IHELP Ministry

After extensive discussion with other churches and social service agencies, we have decided to take the lead in forming a homeless ministry serving the west valley.  We have partnered with Lutheran Social Services, the City of Avondale, CareFirst of Avondale, and nearly a dozen local churches of many different denominatins to put together a homeless ministry called IHELP (Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program.)  Similar programs exist in Mesa, Chandler, and Tempe.

IHELP uses existing church buildings on a rotating basis.  (FSBCA will be the shelter on Thursday nights.)  Our goal is to help people for up to 90 days as they transition out of homelessness.  We offer a safe place to sleep, an evening meal, regular meetings with a case manager, some limited transportation, contact with Christian volunteers, and other help as needed.  We do have rules and expectations:  No sex-offenders are allowed in the program.  There will be no use of drugs or alcohol, no weapons, no violence, a respect for the churches and volunteers, no begging or panhandling while in the program, and a physical search of all bags.

We are currently able to help up to ten adults each night, and we have the capacity to expand later.

"Guests" can sign up for the program at CareFirst, 328 W. Western Avenue, in Avondale.  Intake volunteers are available from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

For general information about the ministry, contact Pastor Jack.  To volunteer at our church, contact Ross Clemens.

You can make a donation to Lutheran Social Services of up to $400 per individual or $800 per couple and get a dollar for dollar tax credit on your Arizona taxes!  For more information, go to  Please make sure that you designate your gift to Southwest Valley IHELP!
